Do French Bulldogs Need Haircuts?

do frenchies need haircuts

We’ve all seen those hairy dogs that have frequent visits to a groomer for their trims. You can always tell when a dog has a haircut, much like you can with a human. But if you’re in the process of thinking about getting a Frenchie, you might want to know more about their hair, and whether they need haircuts. There’s a quick answer below.

Do French Bulldogs need haircuts? Frenchies do not need haircuts. As a short-haired breed of dog, their hair and fur remains short and does not need to be regularly cut. Frenchie will require a little grooming, but there is no need to trim their hair.

Whilst Frenchies don’t need haircuts, that doesn’t mean this breed is completely maintenance free.

Claude will often roll around in mud, getting into dirty water, and generally make himself completely filthy. You can see a photo of him below where he’s just about to make our lives a bit more difficult!

Your Frenchie won’t need a haircut, but he might need a wash from time to time!

Because of this inclination to get absolutely filthy, he will need to be occasionally bathed. We published a video and guide explaining how to give your Frenchie a bath.

The only time I’ve ever had to cut our Frenchie’s hair was when he rolled in chewing gum at our local park. The chewing gum was in his paw fur, and some of it on his legs.

In this case, I did need to cut our French Bulldog’s hair, but it was a just a little trim to get the gum out of his fur. I was able to cut his hair so it didn’t notice, and the hair quickly grew back.

And this leads me onto another tip; Frenchies do actually find it hard to clean themselves. There will be times when you need to give them a helping hand. To find out more about this, read this other guide where I explain you might have to wipe a bum occasionally.

Your Frenchie will shed his own hair

To conclude, French Bulldogs do not need haircuts. Don’t believe anyone who tells you that they do. But, that doesn’t mean you won’t have hair to deal with.

Another popular misconception is that French Bulldog’s don’t shed hair. This also isn’t true. Our own Frenchie Claude sheds loads of it – take a look at this video.

Instead of a haircut you should groom

Rather than cutting off your French Bulldog’s excess hair, you should regularly groom them. If you look at our guide to shedding, I recommend a great hair brushing tool that you can use on your Frenchie to remove any unwanted hair.

Frenchies don’t need haircuts, but you should give them a good brush at least once a week.
